Building Department

The Building Department works with our residents and contractors to ensure that the buildings and structures where we live, work and play are safe. The department reviews permit applications, issues permits and conducts inspections in accordance with the Ontario Building Code, Township of Stone Mills by-laws, and other applicable legislation.

The department also processes and provides zoning and building code information to the public and technical advice to Township Council, committees, and other municipal department’s.

Although the following lists cover most things that require a building permit. It may not cover all of them. If you are in doubt please call us at the building department and we will be glad to answer any questions or concerns.

 You need a building permit if you plan to:

You do not need a building permit to:

  • construct a new building
 
  •   paint or decorate
  • install or repair a septic system
  
  •  install siding on small residential buildings.
  • install or modify heating, plumbing, air conditioning systems or fireplaces
  • build a roofless deck under two feet (height measured from the ground level to the top of the deck) that is not attached to a building
  • demolish or remove all or a portion of a building
 
  • build a utility shed under 108 ft2
  • change a building's use
 
  • re-shingle a roof, provided there is no structural work
  • install, change or remove partitions and load-bearing walls
  • install eaves troughs, provided that drainage is contained on your property
  • make new openings for, or change the size of, doors and windows
 
  • replace or increase insulation, dry-wall or plaster
  • build a garage, balcony or deck
 
  • damp-proof basements
  • excavate a basement or construct a foundation

  • replace existing, same-size doors and windows.
  • renovate, repair or add to a building
 
  • install kitchen or bathroom cupboards without plumbing
  • Install an in ground or above ground pool, spa, whirlpool, or hot tub
  • erect a fence (except for swimming pools ­ outside pools require permits)
  • reconstruct a chimney.
