General Information

The Building Department works with our residents and contractors to ensure that the buildings and structures where we live, work and play are safe. The department reviews permit applications, issues permits and conducts inspections in accordance with the Ontario Building Code, Township of Stone Mills by-laws, and other applicable legislation.

The department also processes and provides zoning and building code information to the public and technical advice to Township Council, committees, and other municipal department’s.

If you are in doubt whether a building permit is required or not respecting your project, please call us at the building department and we will be glad to answer any questions or concerns.

Septic System Permits

Applications for the installation of waste disposal systems (septic systems) are now received by the Kingston Frontenac Lennox And Addington Health Unit.  Through this arrangement, the Health Unit enforces the provisions of Division B Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code 350/06 and issues permits for the installation or the construction of a sewage system as required in order for a building permit may be issued.  An application, including the design and layout of the proposed system and components that includes existing or proposed lot lines, neighbouring wells, any existing or proposed buildings, as well as the location of any driveways or roadways must be submitted with the application.

Public health inspectors review each application and will inspect the site to assess the soil conditions and review the requirements of the Building Code. A cost recovery fee is charged for this service in accordance with the Fee Schedule. Please contact the Environmental Health Program for more information at 613 549 1232 or 800 267 7875, ext. 1248.  To view additional information online, visit the webpage for the Health Unit.
