Civic Addressing
Civic Addressing (commonly referred to as the 911 number), is the process for identifying all properties through a specifically assigned number for each parcel of land and most commonly calculated at the centre of the entrance to a residential dwelling. The civic address number is determined by assigning a number for each 5 meters travelled along a particular road. By example, if a neighbour's civic address number is 200 and a new entrance is constructed one hundred meters along the same side of the road, the number assigned to that new entrance would be 220.
A secondary determination is dependent upon which side of the travelled road the entrance is located. Although, some deviations may occur, generally, odd numbers are located on the north and the east sides of a road with even numbers assigned to the south and west sides.
If you are proposing a new entrance to your property, please contanct the Roads Department, who will make the determination as to the exact number and provide the sign and sign post for the affixing of the number. To ensure continutity in appearance, signs and posts must be obtained through the Township.
The Fee for the determination of the number and for affixing a sign is $40.00. Should a civic address sign require replacement, the $40.00 fee is also applicable.
