Tax Arrears:
The Council of the Township of Stone Mills has found it
necessary to proceed with more stringent measures regarding the collection
of tax arrears on properties that are now liable for sale by the municipality.
Council has decided to proceed with an alternative form of collection
which is termed Tax Sales as per provisions of the Municipal Act, 2001
Part XI and Municipal Tax Sales Rules (O. reg. 181/03). Under the provisions
of this procedure, the treasurer of a municipality may register a "Tax
Arrears Certificate" on January 1st in the third year following that
the real property taxes became owing on both improved and vacant land.
ie. ( where taxes became owing in 2000 a certificate could be registered
on or after January 1, 2003) Upon registration of the Tax Arrears Certificate,
the owner or any interested party has a one year right of redemption
to pay the cancellation price which includes any legal costs incurred
by the municipality on your behalf. After this year has elapsed, the
municipality may dispose of the property.
-
If you are in arrears please contact the office and someone will
assist you with arranging a payment plan to avoid this procedure.
