The Township of Stone Mills was established on January 1, 1998 by the amalgamation of the former Township of Camden East, Township of Sheffield and Village of Newburgh.
The Township of Stone Mills covers 71,064 hectares, which consist of agricultural lands, limestone, granite, marsh, conservation areas, streams, lakes and rivers.
We are centrally located and share boarders with;

The Township is governed by a seven-member council, elected on a quadrennial basis, which consists of a Reeve elected at large, we have a Ward System in which the geographical boundaries remain consistent with the three prior municipalities;
. Ward One, Newburgh Ward has an approximate population of 750 has one representative
. Ward Two, Sheffield Ward has an approximate population of 1,500 has two representatives
. Ward Three, Camden East Ward has an approximate population of 5,000 has three representatives
The Deputy Reeve is elected from within Council.
Our Municipal Office is located in Centreville. There are seven administrative staff in the office, a C.A.O./Clerk, Treasurer, Deputy Clerk, Tax Collector, Accounts Clerk, Waste Management Clerk and an Office Assistant. The building department includes a Chief Building Official and a Building Inspector. In our Roads Department we have a Roads Manager, 2 Supervisors, Roads Clerk and fourteen full-time truck drivers.
Council has employed the committee of the whole of council for most departments. We do however have a few committees who report to council:

We also have a Committee of Adjustment which is independent from Council. This Committee oversees the Severence and Minor Variance Applications received within the Township.
The Township of Stone Mills is very proud of the excellent volunteer participation from our residents.
There are approximately 715 kilometers of roads to maintain within the Township of Stone Mills, including county, hardtop and gravel. Our Roads Department has a main base in Centreville and an additional base in Tamworth. There is also a base just south of Beaver Lake on Highway 41, which once served as an M.T.O. facility.
The Township of Stone Mills has an excellent Volunteer Fire Department. Approximately one hundred volunteers are divided among the four stations within our Municipality. There is a station located in;

The Township also is very proud of the Township of Stone Mills Community Centre, has been home to many sporting events and concerts. It provides an excellent outlet for those who like participate in broom ball, hockey and public skating.
We have six Recreation Fields within the Township, a new soccer field was developed in 2002 and will provide the children in Tamworth with an excellent outlet for their energy.
The Township of Stone Mills has three waste disposal sites, which are open on a part time basis. Recycling is encouraged with drop off sites available.
