British Home Child Day – September 28
Between 1869 and the early 20th century, more than 100,000 children—from toddlers to young adults—were sent from across the United Kingdom to Canada. Known today as British Home Children, many were placed for adoption or sent to work on Canadian farms.
It is estimated that nearly four million Canadians are descendants of British Home Children. In 2026, we mark the 157th anniversary of the arrival of the first group of British Home Children in Canada.
On September 28, National British Home Child Day, communities and organizations across Canada, Scotland and England will recognize the lives, contributions and lasting legacy of British Home Children and their descendants.
The Township of Stone Mills has proclaimed September 28 as British Home Child Day. A commemorative flag will be flown throughout September in honour of those impacted by this chapter in our history.
