Volunteering with SMFD

Stone Mills Fire Department Firefighters are a highly trained and dedicated team of community-minded individuals who work together as a team to provide professional and effective fire services to the township.

If you your interested in joining our team and becoming a Firefighter with Stone Mills Fire Department please check out our information package.

Stone Mills Fire Department conducts an annual recruitment program. Applications are accepted during the month of September.

All four stations have their own Firefighters’ Associations. These are social organizations that are not formally affiliated with township fire protection services. Association members hold events, raise money and contribute to the well-being of the community. The Township appreciates these groups and their ongoing donations of money and equipment.

Water Tanker Shuttle Accreditation

Stone Mills Fire Department maintains Superior Water Tanker Shuttle Accreditation. Accredited Superior Tanker Shuttle Service is a recognized equivalency to hydrant protection. To be accredited, fire departments must commit to maintaining a high standard of organization, and practice delivering the service regularly. The fire department must be able to show through testing and documentation that it can continuously provide water supplies in excess of the minimum required for hydranted municipal-type water supplies.

This accreditation allows many of our residents and business owners to enjoy lower insurance rates on their properties. To be eligible for a reduction in insurance premiums, a residence must be within 8 kilometers of the fire station and within 5 kilometers of an acceptable water source.  Commercial Buildings must be within 5 kilometers of the fire station and 2.5 kilometers of an acceptable water source.  The determination of an acceptable water source is made by Fire Protection Survey Services.

Residents are encouraged to present the Accreditation Certificate to their insurers which may make them eligible for an insurance premium discount.
