“ROOTED IN SERVICE, POWERED BY COMMUNITY”
Celebrating National Public Works Week
Stone Mills, Ontario — The Township of Stone Mills is proud to join municipalities across Canada in recognizing National Public Works Week (May 17th-20th,2026). This week celebrates the dedicated professionals whose work is essential to the quality of life, safety, and prosperity of every resident in our community. From the earliest hours of winter storms to the heat of summer construction season, the Stone Mills Public Works team is on the job — every day, in every season.

Roads & Infrastructure
The Township maintains an extensive road network of 746 lane kilometres of rural roadway, encompassing paved hard-top surfaces, gravel roads, bridges, culverts, and related infrastructure. The municipality also also services the County of Lennox and Addington road maintenance consisting of 325 lane km. Keeping these roads safe and serviceable year-round is the backbone of the Public Works mission.
Winter Maintenance Fleet
Stone Mills owns operates and repairs a substantial winter maintenance fleet to keep roads passable and residents safe through the demanding Ontario winter season:
• 11 Tandem Plow Trucks — covering primary road networks across the Township
• 1 Single-Axle Plow Truck — servicing villages
• 2 Loaders — servicing villages
• 1 Tractor — servicing village snow removal
• 1 Sidewalk Plow — maintaining pedestrian walkways in village areas
• 1 Grader — outfitted with wing for larger events and drifting conditions
Gravel Road Maintenance
A significant portion of the Township’s road network consists of gravel surface roads. Maintaining these routes requires specialized equipment and skilled operators:
• 3 Motor Graders — providing regular grading and shaping of gravel road surfaces
• 1 Truck-Pull Grader — extending reach to secondary and seasonal routes
Aggregate Resources
The Township of Stone Mills is fortunate to own and operate its own aggregate resources — a significant asset that supports cost-effective road maintenance and capital projects.
• 2 Quarries — producing crushed stone for road base, drainage, and construction applications
• 2 Sand & Gravel Pits — supplying granular material for gravel road maintenance and winter operations
By controlling its aggregate supply, Stone Mills reduces costs for taxpayers while maintaining the flexibility to respond quickly to road maintenance needs throughout the year.
Waste Management & Landfill Operations
The Public Works Department manages and operates three municipal landfill facilities serving Stone Mills residents. These sites provide responsible waste disposal options for households and businesses, and are staffed by trained waste management professionals committed to environmental compliance and customer service.
Summer Capital Projects
Beyond day-to-day maintenance, the Stone Mills Public Works team takes on demanding capital construction projects each summer, building and renewing the Township’s core infrastructure. Recent and ongoing project types include:
• Reconstruction of existing infrastructure — improving drainage and surface deficiencies
• Sidewalk Construction & Rehabilitation — enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility
• Storm Sewer Installation — managing surface water and protecting road infrastructure
• Hard-Top Road Construction & Resurfacing — including surface treatment programs across the Township
