Township of Stone Mills Declares September 28th as British Home Child Day

Over 100,000 children from toddler age to eighteen were emigrated from all areas of the United Kingdom to Canada. These children were either adopted or used as a source of labour on Canadian farms. They are known today as the “British Home Children” (BHC). There are an estimated four million descendants of BHC living in Canada today and 2025 marks the 156th anniversary of the arrival of the first party of BHC to Canada. On September 28th, on National BHC Day in Canada, many venues across Canada, Scotland, and England will be participating in various forms of recognition to honour the importance of the BHC and their descendants.
The Township of Stone Mills hereby proclaims September 28th as “British Home Child Day“ with a flag being flown for the month of September to honour those impacted and ask our community to join us in commemorating this day in history.
