Cemeteries

The Township of Stone Mills owns and maintains eleven cemeteries. Our cemeteries are regulated by the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, S.O. 2002, c. 33. All township maintained cemeteries are since inactive/abandoned, meaning no new burials are regularly occurring due to space limitations, ownership changes, or closure.

Order for Internment

Although new internment rights can not be administered, if you hold internment rights in a township maintained cemetery that has since been deemed inactive a burial is able to take place with proper documentation of previous internment rights. 

Required Documentation

  • Burial Permit or Cremation Certificate
  • Death Certificate 
  • Old plot deed or Internment rights certificate
  • Family tree showing lineage and ties to cemetery

Eligibility For Order Of Internment

If Internment rights were granted before the cemetery became inactive, the original rights holder or their legal heirs retain those rights unless they have been surrendered.

Monument Installation 

If you wish to have a monument installed in any cemetery in Stone Mills, here are the following steps

  1. Contact a monument company of your choosing.
  2. Fill out the Monument Installation Request Form and attach the drawing of the proposed stone.
  3. Once approved, the monument company will contact the township for the appropriate location for installation. There will be a fee applied.
  4. Depending on the size of the monument you are purchasing, there may be a fee for Care and Maintenance
